five dollarsThe first time I heard about fiverr.com was a couple of years ago when 2 people I followed on twitter were having a bit of a debate as to whether one of the fine fellows had purchased a substantial amount of fake twitter followers. I had never heard of fake followers before, so did a little digging. Turned out it was incredibly easy to buy masses of follows from accounts that were actually (clearly) automated fake accounts being run by some bot net or other, and one of the places you could buy a ready supply of them was fiverr.com.

I set up a fake twitter account of my own www.twitter.com/thisisnotascam, paid $5 to a supplier on the site and to my amazement the next day I had 5,000 extra followers. Close inspection of the accounts showed they clearly weren’t real people, but in any case I found it impressive that you could get a service like that, or any service in fact, for $5.

I decided to give the site another look recently and noticed they had some pretty awesome video producers that made some quality, or at the very least novely, videos. I took the plunge and broke the bank on getting the following 4 videos done, I shared them on twitter and facebook and in the end it was a) a bit of fun, b) I got some new followers out of it and c) I actually got a job from someone who discovered me from a retweet.

Behold the madness of what $5 can buy you:

The first video I got made by a fiverr.com producer was when I was at the height of Breaking Bad withdrawal symptoms. I saw this one and thought that for $5 this wasn’t too bad a deal!

After a bit more browsing around the site I found a guy from India who will hold up your message on a piece of paper while he performs a rather strange eyebrow dance. Seeing as I am full of cheesy jokes I thought that “eye brow raisingly good presentations” was sufficiently ingenius, so decided to drop a whopping $5 on it.

Equally quirky, and equally international, the next video I had made was of a traditional desi-drummer from Pakistan, he offers to put any message you want on the side of his drum as he goes about his stuff at the side of the street.

The final video I had created was my favourite by far. These guys in Macedonia will tape any message you want to a ninja star and throw it into a tree. If you pay extra you can even get them to do a flip before they throw it… the whole thing is equal parts physically impressive and hilarious.

Mad stuff indeed, but a bit of fun. Fiverr is full of some of the weirdest stuff you’ll see for sale online, most of it is a bit poor to be honest, but dig around for long enough and you’ll find some gems.
